Deciding whether or not to remodel our bathroom has been on our mind for some time. We moved into this house about four years ago and about two years ago we did a cosmetic facelift to the bathroom where we added skinny lap and painted the bathroom shower. It was an inexpensive fix and has been a great option so far.
Old Shower with Retrofit Plate
As most of you know, last week we had to replace an old shower fixture in our 1940s bathroom. After attempting to do the job ourselves… We learned that the part we were looking for is no longer on the market and is extremely hard to find. We hired a plumber and long story short they cut two giant holes in our wall and added a retrofitted plate to our shower. And in my opinion, it was not the prettiest option although now we have a fully functioning shower again.
Shower Budgets
It can be a little depressing knowing we spent over $1500 on this plumbing issue with the result in hand. However, my amazing husband reminded me that when we do decide to remodel our bathroom (if we ever do) that this portion of the remodel will be paid for. The old 1940 pipes were eventually going to need updated and so if a remodel happens… That portion will be paid for and ready to go!
We May Never Remodel our Bathroom
Now, why would we ever NOT remodel our old bathroom? Well, I think the answer will surprise you. Carter and I have been thinking a lot about our future and this bungalow. We haven’t made any decisions and it’s mostly just talking… until the day it isn’t.
With the housing market, the way it is, and more specifically our location, Carter and I have thrown around the idea of starting over on the lot we have. The lot is worth way more than our house that’s currently sitting on it. The lot is also considered “bigger” when comparing the size of the current structure. So we could build a great home for our future family right here. We love our neighborhood/location and with the current housing market, it might make the most financial sense for us. Until we know what our future holds, we don’t want to throw money at a bathroom remodel if we are going to start fresh. I know, the thought of knocking down this bungalow kills me too!
As I said, this is mostly just talking… Until the day it isn’t. But until then follow on Instagram for how I dress up our new shower accessories. Comment below your thoughts… I would love to hear them!

Ok, that’s not the reason I expected. 😬 I thought you were going to say because living through a bathroom remodel when you only have one bathroom would be a NIGHTMARE. I can see how that wouldn’t fixture wouldn’t be your favorite, but it still seems much better than an emergency remodel. We also have 1 bathroom in our little 1940s house. In 2016 there was obviously a leak/moisture issue to the point where some shower tiles started lifting up from the wall. My boyfriend actually remodeled it without telling me while I was in Alaska for a week. I won’t lie, I wasn’t happy to come home after 24 hours of travel to find dust over everything and not be able to shower cause grout was curing. But the before bathroom was hideous (think faux tile paneling, peel and stick floors with gaps and that same square shower tile you have) and I love the final result and am thankful I didn’t have to experience that remodel!!

Sounds like a great option. Is there an opportunity to leave the Bungalow and build a larger home? What is the zoning- possibly for a some rental income or extra space for family. Good luck with the current bathroom!✌🏽
